Brescia University Advanced Robotics Laboratory (ARL) was established in 1993, with the main goal of providing researchers and students with an efficient and flexible tool for experimental verification of ongoing research in the field of robotics. ARL is directed by Professor Riccardo Cassinis, who has been conducting research in the area of robotics for the last 25 years, and has founded similar laboratories at Milan Polytechnic University, the first in Italy, active since 1975), and at the University of Udine (1987). The past 25 years have witnessed all the significant developments in the field of robotics, beginning with the first microprocessor driven robot control systems. Prof. Cassinis has been involved in almost all robot-related research topics, ranging from programming languages to sensors, vision systems, and multirobot cells. Around 1987, scientific interest on industrial robots was gradually replaced by the new, more stimulating research on mobile autonomous robots. While pursuing highly scientific goals, ARL has always kept a tight connection with the lively industrial area within which it is located, and has always been available for studying practical problems related to sensors, automation and robotics. This has led to several interesting cooperative efforts with industrial companies. Two main research areas were investigated: the first is related to industrial robots, while the second, which is nowadays considered more interesting from the scientific point of view, refers to autonomous robots. It should be noted that interconnections are so prominent, that it is difficult to separate industrial from advanced robotics: the experience gained during the first fifteen years of activity on industrial robots proved extremely helpful in solving many problems typical of autonomous machines, and solutions found for autonomous machines often find applications in the field of industrial robots and, more generally speaking, of industrial automation.
