The Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC), the oldest yacht club in Malaysia, was first registered as "Port Swettenham Yacht Club" in July 1969 under the patronage of His Highness the Sultan of Selangor. In 1972, the name was changed to "Selangor Yacht Club". In March 1989, on its 20th Anniversary, the Club was officially opened and given its new name by His Royal Highness in conjunction with his sixty-third birthday. With 1,000 members, a moored fleet of 90 (30 keelboats and 60 powerboats), and a further 130 boats on the club's hardstanding, the RSYC is the largest and most active yacht club in the country. The club's activities include keelboat racing (March through November), a wide range of training programmes, dinghy sailing for children, fishing competitions and flotillas. It is not necessary to own a boat to participate in the club activities as many boatowners welcome additional crew. The clubhouse, completed in November 1996 supports the club with a Malaysian and Western cuisine restaurant, bar, meeting rooms, children's room, jackpot room, swimming pool, changing room, gym, chandlery and slipway. Moorings and hardstanding are available on a first come, first serve basis. The club offers three types of membership: Ordinary, Temporary and Provisional.
